Description
Under general supervision is accountable for the clinical management of patients.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs comprehensive history and physical and documents same appropriately in EMR for inpatients and outpatients with acute, subacute and chronic pain conditions related to musculoskeletal, neurological and spine disorders.
- Performs interventional pain management procedures such as: Epidural steroid injections, Facet joint injections and medial branch blocks, Sacroiliac joint injections, Radiofrequency ablations, Peripheral and sympathetic nerve blocks, Spinal cord stimulator trials and management.
- Assumes responsibility for developing and implementing individualized evidence-based treatment plans emphasizing functional restoration and quality of life.
- Writes standard orders in accordance with hospital policy.
- Writes appropriate orders related to pre-existing conditions.
- Discusses physical and/or emotional findings of patient, which may interfere with care of the patient with provider colleagues and practice staff as necessary.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including anesthesiologists, neurologist, physical therapists and behavioral health specialists.
- Participate in case conferences, quality improvement initiatives and department meetings.
- Evaluates patient progress on a continuing basis and alters treatment modalities as needed.
- Evaluates medical, social and educational needs of assigned patients.
- Initiates referral to appropriate ancillary departments and community resources based on patient need and documents on the progress note.
- Writes progress notes for each visit documenting pertinent information regarding patient progress and treatment regime.
- Writes orders appropriate to the patient's care requirements in compliance with existing contract.
- Establishes medical diagnoses in compliance with contract.
- Makes immediate referral of acute and or life-threatening patient conditions to emergency department or specialist physician as needed. Documents physical findings and treatment plan pertaining to same.
- Performs activities to meet patient/family educational needs.
- Participates actively in health teaching of patient and family to include preventative health care as well as current medical condition and treatment regime.
- Evidence of same by documentation on progress note.
- Plans and reviews home care instructions with patient and family if needed. Include needs for service provided by community resources and hospital based ancillary services.
- Assumes responsibility for utilizing opportunities for educational advancement by pursuing activities to meet identified educational needs and those required for continued certification as well as attending mandatory in service training.
Working Conditions
- Normal patient care environment with possible exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.
- Exposure to adverse working conditions due to performance of patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases.
Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited medical program
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Experience
- Proven work experience as a physiatrist
- Board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)
- Active state medical license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in management of patient rehabilitation, creating customized treatment plans, conducting physical exams and monitoring patient progress
- Well versed in latest rehabilitation techniques and commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and team collaboration skills
Licensures, Certifications
- Licensed as a physician in the State of Maryland.
- Complete required CME credits for continuous licensure
- Board certified by appropriate board consistent with specialty
- DEA license
Physical Requirements
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 80% of work time in performing duties and working with patients and families often during stressful situations
- Ability to meet physical demands of job with or without accommodation
